Technical SEO Checklist: 12 Steps to Rank Your Business Website on Google
If your business website is not showing up on Google, technical SEO is often the first place to look. You can publish great content, but search engines cannot rank pages they cannot crawl, index, or load quickly on mobile devices.
This technical SEO checklist covers the 12 highest-impact fixes we apply on every web development and SEO project at Neprino—whether you run WordPress, Shopify, or a custom Next.js site.
1. Submit and verify your XML sitemap
Your XML sitemap tells Google which pages exist and how often they change. Generate one automatically (most CMS platforms do this), then submit it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps. Include only indexable URLs—exclude admin pages, filtered views, and duplicate content.
2. Fix crawl errors and broken links
Check Google Search Console for 404 errors, redirect chains, and server errors. Broken internal links waste crawl budget and hurt user experience. Aim for clean 301 redirects when URLs change, and fix or remove dead links within two weeks of discovery.
3. Improve page speed and Core Web Vitals
Google uses Core Web Vitals—Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)—as ranking signals. Compress images, lazy-load below-the-fold media, minify CSS and JavaScript, and use a CDN for global visitors. Target LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile.
4. Make every page mobile-friendly
More than 60% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. Use responsive design, readable font sizes (16px minimum), and tap targets at least 48px wide. Test with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test and fix layout issues before they affect rankings.
5. Set unique title tags and meta descriptions
Every indexable page needs a unique title tag (50–60 characters) and meta description (150–160 characters) that include your target keyword naturally. Avoid duplicate titles across product, service, and blog pages—this is one of the most common SEO mistakes on business websites.
6. Use one H1 and a logical heading structure
Each page should have exactly one H1 that describes the main topic. Use H2 and H3 tags to break content into scannable sections. Search engines use headings to understand page structure; users use them to decide whether to keep reading.
7. Add schema markup (structured data)
Implement JSON-LD schema for your organization, local business, products, articles, and FAQs. Structured data helps Google show rich results—star ratings, FAQ snippets, and business info—in search results, which improves click-through rate.
8. Secure your site with HTTPS
HTTPS is a confirmed ranking signal. Install a valid SSL certificate, redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS, and fix mixed-content warnings (loading HTTP assets on HTTPS pages). Free certificates from Let's Encrypt work for most business sites.
9. Optimize images with alt text and modern formats
Every image needs descriptive alt text that explains what it shows—not keyword stuffing. Serve images in WebP or AVIF format, specify width and height to prevent layout shift, and use descriptive file names like web-development-team-nepal.webp instead of IMG_0042.jpg.
10. Build a clean internal linking structure
Link related service pages, blog posts, and case studies together using descriptive anchor text. A strong internal link structure distributes authority across your site and helps Google discover new pages faster after publish.
11. Canonicalize duplicate URLs
If the same content is accessible at multiple URLs (with/without trailing slash, HTTP parameters, www vs non-www), set a canonical tag pointing to the preferred version. Inconsistent canonicals are a common reason pages fail to rank despite good content.
12. Monitor and iterate monthly
Technical SEO is not a one-time task. Review Google Search Console and analytics monthly for indexing drops, speed regressions, and new crawl errors. Schedule quarterly audits as your site grows and you add new pages or features.
When to hire an SEO specialist
If your site has hundreds of pages, e-commerce filters, or a custom application behind it, a technical SEO audit by an experienced team saves months of trial and error. At Neprino, we combine web development and SEO so fixes get implemented—not just reported.
